Our client is looking for an Infrastructure & Virtualisation Engineer to join their Gqeberha-based engineering team, or if you are located in Cape Town, join their Claremont team.

This role is ideal for someone with hands-on experience in virtualisation, infrastructure operations, backup management, and customer-hosted environments, who enjoys working across modern infrastructure platforms while contributing to operational stability and continuous improvement.

You’ll play a key role in supporting and maintaining the organisation's virtualised infrastructure with a strong focus on Proxmox, VMware, backup platforms, storage health, and infrastructure operations, while also assisting with day-to-day connectivity troubleshooting and infrastructure-related support across client environments.

Key ResponsibilitiesVirtualisation & Infrastructure Operations

• Support and maintain the organisation's virtualisation platforms, with Proxmox as the primary environment.

• Monitor hypervisor health, cluster performance, storage utilisation, and resource availability.

• Perform VM provisioning and lifecycle management across customer and internal environments.

• Assist with cluster operations, host monitoring, high-availability (HA) environments, and capacity planning.

• Troubleshoot hypervisor-related performance and operational issues.

• Support planned infrastructure maintenance and upgrades.

Virtual Machine Deployment & Migration

• Provision virtual machines according to customer and project requirements.

• Configure CPU, RAM, storage, networking, tagging, and VM templates.

• Assist with customer and internal VM migrations, including VMware to Proxmox migrations.

• Support cutover planning and migration execution with minimal downtime.

Backup & Recovery

• Monitor and maintain backup health across:

  • Veeam Backup & Replication

  • Nakivo Backup Server

• Investigate failed backup jobs and restore issues.

• Monitor backup storage utilisation and retention compliance.

• Assist with VM-level restore operations when required.

• Support backup optimisation and repository maintenance.

Storage & Platform Maintenance

• Monitor storage pools, storage health, and disk utilisation.

• Assist with performance optimisation and infrastructure tuning.

• Support platform maintenance, including:

  • Proxmox updates

  • VMware ESXi / vCenter system updates

  • Firmware updates

  • Repository clean-up

  • Host performance optimisation

Infrastructure Support & Client Environments

• Support customer-hosted infrastructure environments from the virtualisation layer upward.

• Assist with infrastructure stability, uptime, and platform readiness.

• Attend client meetings where infrastructure input or reporting is required.

• Provide insight into host health, backup status, storage capacity, and infrastructure recommendations.

Network Support

• Monitor network dashboards for alerts, outages, and performance issues.

• Perform basic network diagnostics, including:

  • Ping

  • Traceroute

  • DNS checks

  • Endpoint connectivity testing

• Troubleshoot connectivity issues and identify whether faults are local, infrastructure-related, or upstream.

• Escalate advanced routing or core network issues to senior network engineers.

Documentation & Operations

• Create and maintain technical documentation, including:

  • Host configurations

  • VM deployment procedures

  • Migration plans

  • Backup processes

  • Maintenance procedures

  • Infrastructure SOPs

• Manage infrastructure-related tickets with clear communication, accurate notes, and timely resolution.

• Contribute to internal process improvement and operational efficiency initiatives.

Technical Experience Required

Strong hands-on experience in:

• Proxmox VE

• VMware / ESXi / vCenter

• Virtual Machine Provisioning & Lifecycle Management

• Backup Monitoring & Restore Operations

• Storage Monitoring & Capacity Management

• Infrastructure Monitoring

• Ticket Management in a client-facing support environment

Advantageous Experience

Experience in any of the following would be highly beneficial:

• Ceph

• ZFS

• Storage replication

• Cluster management

• Datacentre infrastructure

• Infrastructure migrations

• Networking diagnostics and connectivity troubleshooting

• MSP or managed infrastructure environments

Qualifications

• Relevant tertiary qualification in IT, Infrastructure, Systems Administration, or a related field preferred.

• Relevant certifications in virtualisation, infrastructure, or backup platforms are advantageous.

Experience

• 2–4+ years' experience in an infrastructure administration, virtualisation, or systems support role.

• Hands-on experience with virtualisation platforms such as Proxmox or VMware.

• Experience with backup monitoring and restore operations.

• Experience supporting production infrastructure environments.

• Experience working in MSP, hosting, or customer infrastructure environments is advantageous.
